Above: Testing a few Plusixfive dishes. Gozgozgoz (left in the top photo, in pink shirt) makes a mighty fine achar (pickles) and satay from scratch. But hey, don't take my word for it. Try it for yourselves.
After months of plotting, recipe tasting and testing, cajoling and calendar tetris, I am absolutely delighted to invite you to the debut dinner of +(65) / Plusixfive, London's first Singapore-themed supperclub.
(At least I think it's the first. I'd really like to believe that if there were already one in town I'd have sniffed out the sambal belacan by now...)
Plusixfive is a labour of love and culinary madness birthed by my dear friend and fellow food geek Gozgozgoz. Goz is apparently known by the Ginger Pig guys down at Borough Market by name and by the weirdness of his requests. When he couldn't find a platter large enough for his Chinese New Year yu sheng (raw fish prosperity salad) he turned his entire dining table into a platter by shrink wrapping it. You get the idea.
Goz and I bond over our shared anxiety to learn the quickly disappearing arts of making our Singapore heritage dishes and snacks from scratch, like bak kwa, kway pie tee, and ang chow to name a few. I've been told that when Goz and I get deep into a natter, only 20% of our food-nerd babble is understandable to nice normal people. So it's my pleasure and honour to help Goz out with his new endeavour at front of house, and possibly with some kitchen-monkeying if needed.
And did I mention that he makes a bloody marvelous braised duck?
But hell, don't take my word for it. Come see and eat for yourselves LAH.
What's cooking?: Goz will confirm the menu closer to the date, but he's currently thinking ox cheek rendang, lor ahrk (Teochew braised duck) and sambal stingray (skate), among others. We'll be serving dinner family style at 1 table.
When: Sunday 29 May dinner (don't worry, Monday's a bank holiday!)
Where: Goz's flat in Islington
Suggested donation: £25 per person, BYOB
